Somebody please explain why

my son, who is not quite four, can read about six words but still won't poop in the potty?

You know how they say nobody ever went to kindergarten wearing a diaper? I'm just not so sure about that one anymore.

Here are the words we know for sure that Matthew knows: yes, no, off, Mara, Matthew, dog, Mommy, Daddy, Tim, Katye, Elmo, PBS kids and love. Yesterday when we went shopping for tools, he wanted to know why the building said "Love" -- Mara said, scornfully, "It says Lowes, not love!" I was just goggling in amazement.

It makes me wonder what the hell ELSE he knows. And why oh why won't he poop in the damned potty already???? My children are freaks. Obviously it's genetic!

Generosity

This week was the Scholastic Book Fair at Mara's school. It was a complicated matter, because on Wednesday I did not send enough money. Stupid me, I thought five dollars would be enough (and it would have if Mara had read the price correctly on the book she wanted to buy, but she thought the $3.99 price said $8.99 and freaked out).

At any rate, we talked about it on Wednesday evening and then I went to knitting group, after assuring Mara that we would make sure she had more money to take in the next day -- so she could get the book she had picked out.

So this morning I get out the ten dollar bill I had saved for this purpose (which cleaned me out after I had also given her $1.85 in lunch money) and tucked it into her wallet. I showed her where it was and put her wallet in her backpack.

This afternoon she gets in the car and I asked, "So how was book fair? Did you get to go again? Did you have enough money?"
"Oh yes. I got to go. And when I got there, I had your money and two extra fives that I must have forgotten about, so I got lots of books!"

It turned out that Tim had put his ten dollars in the night before, so the kid got to book fair just absolutely flush. And here's what she bought:

2 books for herself -- I Want an Iguana and Stink, the Incredible Shrinking Kid
2 books for Matthew for right now -- a Star Wars android book with stickers and a Teletubbies book
2 books she is saving as a surprise for Matthew's birthday -- I can't remember the titles just now
and
1 book for her friend Avery, who loves Barbie. (It's the Barbie Mermaidia book)

When I was six (or 36 for that matter), I'm pretty sure I would not have even considered spending 75% of my book fair money on stuff for other people. I am so proud of her!

P.S. -- she is already on page 83 of Stink, the Incredible Shrinking Kid. She says it's great and I get to borrow it when she's done. Giggle.

Signs that I have finally lost my mind

Today the kids were bored and whiney. They had really played well for most of the day -- they decided they wanted to take the Little People to the beach (you know the Fisher Price Little People, most of whom I have removed to the attic...) so I got a casserole dish and filled it about half-way up with water and they were busy for hours.

Okay, I went to the library, so they may not have been actually doing that the whole time I was gone, but when I came back they were in there "still" so it looked like they had been at the beach for the duration.

Anyway, Tim left for the comic book store and the grocery and I was looking up stuff on-line and the kids finally got tired of each other and were driving me nuts. Matthew was drumming on all the furniture and Mara was singing a song she was making up as she went along -- in the loudest voice she could muster.

So I went upstairs and dug out the "One Man Jam" electronic drum machine I bought a year or so ago on an after Christmas sale at Value City. We set it up, I found the extra set of headphones and they are going to town. And I feel just insane. What was I thinking??? But it does have the headphone jack and I pulled the splitter out of the computer jack and plugged it in there, so as long as they're willing to share the drumsticks, it's got to be better than the strident song with no discernable end and countless dents in all my tables...

Now I could find something to keep ME from being bored...
