First day at school

We went over to school today to check in and see about reimbursement for our moving expenses. It was pretty good. We saw some folks and I got keys to my room and we got our email addresses. If you want my official email, give me a comment and I'll send it to you individually.

The social studies teacher and I had a really terrific talk about interdisciplinary planning and while this year is probably not going to be as cross-disciplinary as I'd like, I think we will work well together in the future.

We found the dishes. Still lots to unpack, but we've got internet at home now at least.

The moving ends

now the unpacking begins.

Actually, we are making considerable headway. Almost all the books are unpacked. We lost two giant built-in floor to ceiling shelves, so many of the books are double stacked, but they are unpacked, so I am not complaining.

I can't find any plates. I have two plates and I can't find the rest of them. It's very perplexing. Every book I open is either kids' stuff or books. Well, at least the books are getting put away so now it will all be kid stuff. Or maybe I'll find some plates eventually. I dunno.

There is plenty to relate, but I am too tired to relate it just now.

Thanks for all the positive thinking!

Moving Day Infinity

We're back in Ohio -- coming here to get "the last load of stuff" which won't be the last load by a long shot and I am so frustrated I just want to scream. We have too much stuff. But we got rid of so much!!!

All of this will NOT fit in the van and we can't afford a truck. I have to go now and figure out what we're going to either leave in the house or just take the hell to Goodwill already. GRRRRR!

I want to be DONE with this already!

Moving Day Three

So, the truck was duly driven to Tennessee, parked overnight and now is unloaded. We didn't exactly have six to eight adoring high school students, but my dad did bring a furniture moving dolly from the church, so we were able to get it all done just the four of us. Really just Dad and Tim, but Mom and I tried to help where we could.

The beds are made. The family room is clear enough to look like a room. Our room has one too many items of furniture in it, which I really do think we're going to have to remedy. I wanted a bookcase in there, but there just isn't room after all I think. We can probably put that shelf in the study.

The kitchen stuff is still a disaster, but it looks like nothing has broken -- none of the furniture anyway -- and we are on our way to being settled.

I'm so tired.

On Tuesday we drive back up to get the rest of the stuff. Sigh.

It's moving day

8:13 AM

Tim has gone to get the truck. Keep your fingers crossed that it is actually a 17 footer and that everything essential fits!

I'll update later if possible.

3:20 PM

It was (it still is) actually a 17 foot truck. We had to wait until ten a.m. to get it, but it is a manageable size. And it's even loaded already. About eight of Tim's former students came to help. They were terrific and we had most of the big stuff in the front yard by noon. Then we started getting it to fit on the truck.

Because I know you are worrying, yes, all the big stuff fit on the truck. There are some things remaining -- some goes to Goodwill, some will go in the van with me and the kids -- and some will have to be picked up later either in the van or in a smaller UHaul in a second load.

But I am very pleased. The kitchen is all loaded up (except the microwave, which was intended for the van anyway). All of the things that wouldn't have fit in the van are in the truck and of furniture we have two chairs and an end table that still need to get to Nashville. I think they might both fit in this van load with the electronics and the kids. All the rugs went, which is very good. The table and chairs and beds -- bunk bed too -- are on the truck. The piano and washer and dryer and all the books are on the truck.

I think all the essential stuff will go in the van okay. I'm not sure what to do about the bikes, but we'll work that out eventually.

The upstairs bathroom is cleaned out -- shelves, medicine cabinet, etc. The kids room is empty and swept out. So, now we do the rest of the last minute tidying up stuff, eat some dinner, take some things to Goodwill and go to bed at Grammy's house.

Tomorrow we'll load the van and hit the road. Don't uncross your fingers yet, it seems to be working well.

The status of things

So, the house has been on the market for a full week now. We've had one realtor showing -- where she brought all the realtors in her office to see the house -- and one client showing -- where somebody asked to see the house and came to see it. The latter had us really excited, but it turned out to be "an older couple who had some trouble getting around" so we are not holding out hope.

Have I posted a picture of my house? Here are two for you to see:

Now, imagine you are an "older person" with "trouble getting around." Why on earth would you look at this house to buy? Don't all the windows on the second floor seem to suggest there are steps? Hell's bells, even the deck is three levels, and you can see that by driving through the alley in the back of the house. I know 'cause I did it when I was the potential buyer.

Clearly we're talking about buyers with dementia. Or something. I just hope they are crazy enough to decide to buy it anyway. But I doubt they will.

We've taken two loads to Nashville in the van. We'll take another one down before we load up the official moving truck. Which is reserved. The movers didn't work out -- for a number of reasons that I don't want to document right now, but we have stepped down to a 17 foot truck, and the 9' difference is okay with Tim, who seems much more relaxed about everything since I called UHaul and made the change to our reservation.

Nancy came over today and helped me box up most of the books. There is one bookcase in our room that still has stuff on it, and two cases of kids books that need to be boxed, but the bulk of the stuff is taken care of. The whole piano room is boxed, and that's amazing. And they are all in the same size box, which will help considerably with loading the truck. Always before we've had a zillion differently sized boxes and that was a complete pain in the truck loading process. The unloading was also annoying.

So that's the extent of things. The contents of the china cabinet are mostly in Nashville unloaded already. The kitchen stuff still needs to be packed and there are odds and ends to be dealt with, but we are so far ahead of where we were last time -- it amazes me. This may actually work!

Hope you are well! Keep your fingers crossed about this whole thing. It's not over yet!
